G.W. Bot: The Long Paddock: A 30 Year Survey

8 October - 19 November 2010

The exhibition gw bot: the long paddock A 30 YEAR SURVEY is a touring exhibition developed by Goulburn Regional Art Gallery and curated by Peter Haynes.  The tour will travel to regional galleries throughout the east coast of Australia, giving both city and regional venues the opportunity to showcase works created by G W Bot.  G W Bot is a good friend of Australian regional galleries and is a generous speaker and visiting artist so many of the venues participating in this tour will benefit from having her conduct artists talks or workshops while the exhibition is on display.

While her earlier works contained motifs and symbols, her recent work has evolved from the more literal figurative representations of the 80s to the almost pure ‘glyph-marking’ that we see now. Peter Haynes, curator, writes in the extensive catalogue for this exhibition that ‘Bot’s own artistic journey has led her to many destinations but it is ultimately the journey that matters most to her.’

Phillip O’Brien writing in The Canberra Times on Saturday 22nd October, 2010 discusses G.W Bot ‘finding her own expression in the form of glyphs – symbols of natural elements’ G.W Bot has a close connection with the Australian landscape and uses her own personal language as a means to depict it. The garden is an important aspect of her work “all of my work is intimately interrelated thematically and essentially deals with questions of environments - personal and public - and an individual's path through these environments as an allegory for a person's passage through life. Much of my work is involved in a dialectic between private landscape - cultivated, enclosed, full of possibilities and the wilderness - infinite, wild and unpredictable.  The paddock forms a curious middle ground.  I am particularly interested in 'entrances' into the landscape as a passageway between worlds.”

In a way her glyphs speak a universal language, the language of life that surrounds each of us – at once familiar and seemingly instantly legible, but on closer encounter, indecipherable and unknowable.  These glyphs take on a metaphysical nature and become metaphors for language and landscapes within us all.

The exhibition showcases prints, paintings, artist’s books and sculpture and is a ‘must see’ exhibition for artists, students, printmakers and art collectors as well as the general public interested in art.  The exhibition works are supported by a comprehensive education kit and activities for visiting families and children.
